Osplet!

Alma & Ossi's first chick of the season hatched during the night. First sighting was at 2:58am, but too dark to see much more than that some tiny thing is moving in the nest cup. Here are screenshots of the little one in the morning.

First good peek as mom gets up to adjust her position.
So smol.
Alone for a moment as the parents switch brooding shifts.
Dad's home to greet his hatchling for the first time. Ossi has a leg band, while Alma doesn't, which makes telling them apart easier.

chirp
Ossi settling down to brood.
Alma didn't stay away for long, though. Time for another switch.
Carefully folding talons.

Lookatit! LOOKATIT! SO CUTE! Thank you for sharing these, I didn't know they walked like that in their comfy nest. Also, I remember watching a documentary that had these birbs (a loooong time ago), and they were literally called "fish eagles" in my language, is that true? I mean, do they primarily prey on fish?

Yes, they rarely eat other things than fish. They spot fish from above, and unlike other fishing raptors that catch fish from just under the surface of the water as they fly, ospreys dive into the water themselves, then take off flying again with their catch in their talons right after resurfacing. Speaking of their talons, as I recall they're the only raptors other than owls that have two toes pointing forward and two toes pointing back in each foot (instead of three pointing forward and one pointing back), excellent for scewering slippery fish. It's kind of amazing how they manage to fold those huge fish hooks so they don't hurt their chicks when they brood them.

Oh, yea, now that you mentioned it I remember them diving into the water and the 2 front 2 backwards facing talons.

Thank you for answering and all the additional information!
