In the first draft of the dialogue, April was more impressed about birds being dinosaurs, but I figured that actually, that wouldn't be news to her. If she has any passing interest in dinosaurs in this day and age, she's already heard about it, and if anything she'd probably be the one telling her parents about it.
Ilon and Ev are my age; if they haven't been keeping an eye on dinosaur news since they were kids, their idea of what they were like would be pretty much stuck in the days when the JW dinosaurs would still have been considered scientifically accurate, and if they have, you can bet they would have taught that stuff to their kids, too, since they're from the generation during whose adolescence it has become common knowledge. But, adults writing kid characters tend to draw from their own childhoods, don't they. I was about April's age when the first JP movie came out, and the connection between birds and extinct dinosaurs was still pretty revolutionary to include in a big blockbuster movie (not that it couldn't stand to be emphasized more in blockbuster movies and other media about dinosars after that first JP movie, too, but that's a discussion for another time). Nowadays, it's still cool that it's true, but yeah mom we know.
Also in case there was any doubt about it, Ilon and Ev are not two single mother gal pals; they're married to each other and their kids call them both mom.
