Una & Jouko!

The chicks at nest#4 of Sääksilive Osprey nests were banded today!

The older chick (left), formerly known as N1, is a female. Her band ID is UNA, and since that already sounds like a name, her new name, too, is Una. The younger chick, N2, is a male. His band ID is UNJ, and his name is Jouko, after the late ornithologist who built the platform of the nest these chicks hatched in, and also banded their dad Niilo (SRN) in 2007.

Little brother is quite a bit smaller than big sister, but considering their age difference and male raptors being smaller than females in general, that's to be expected.

Both are doing well, and as seen here, have already been reunited with parents. Video of their banding and measuring is here (also ft. mom Nuppu circling above and arguing with a tern in the background, perhaps this tern).

Screenshots from three raptor nestcams. Warning for some views of fish prey in the first two, and some sibling rivalry in the second one.

First a few pictures from nest#1 of Sääksilive Osprey nests. Eine (female, right) and Eura (male, left) now have a chick (just one, there were two eggs and the other didn't hatch), and I just had to get some screenshots of this lovely moment (about a week ago, the chick is now two weeks old, and is a week old in these screenshots). Eine is shielding the little one from the sun, and keeping a lookout, while Eura feeds the chick.

Park staff activities

Drove my ranger jeep next to a dino enclosure to stay parked there for a moment and take some photos, and this guy came over to just stand next to the car.

...Can I help you, sir?

Oh, I guess he got detained by security?
