One of my favorite moments in DA2. It’s completely unexpected if you’re playing for the first time, looks dramatic.. and then the first words this guy who just killed someone with his (relatively) bare hands says to Hawke are a deadpan “I apologize”. Way to make an impression. And I think that’s deliberate on Fenris’s part in-universe, too.
The “phase your hand into opponent’s chest and literally break their heart” thing doesn’t seem to be something he just does all the time in battle, even here it looks like it needs a moment to charge or whatever before he can use it. And he’s not unarmed, despite the sword not showing up in the cutscene.
Whether he was going to let this guy live had he heeded the suggestion to run, we’ll never know, but Fenris walks in front of him to say it, turning his back on the bounty hunter in favor of facing Hawke and co like they’re his intended audience. He knows using the lyrium markings looks intimidating, and he uses that to send a message to these people he can’t afford to have to fight, too. The pause where he stares them down after killing the bounty hunter is to tell them not to mess with him, because see what he can do.
But he also needs their help still, and he did trick them, which they might be pissed off about, so he’s being polite, and as honest and straightforward as circumstances allow (as Fenris generally is, except about revealing his weaknesses). He’s so on edge for this whole exchange and trying not to show just how scared he is.
Then when they get to the mansion, if there was any chance of a surprise attack, Fenris ruins it by yelling how he’s “not afraid of you, Danarius!” and how the demons summoned to fight them “cannot stop us!”. That first one is a lie, he’s terrified of Danarius. But suddenly he’s part of an “us”, and it gives him hope. He doesn’t get to confront Danarius yet, but, even if he’s still wary of whether to fully trust them, for the first time since he can remember, he has someone on his side.
“I suppose there are advantages in numbers”, he sounds so casual in saying, but it means so much to him to not have to be alone against the world anymore.
