The Kirkwall chantry is such an ominous place. I feel like Hawke’s first
visit being at night and walking into a trap set by templars is a fitting
introduction. When you walk in the door, the giant statue of Andraste looms
ahead and casts its shadow on you.
The building itself is huge, but the space
reserved for the common people’s religious practices is proportionally small. A
couple of rows of seating on the upper level and a cluster of candles, but most
of even the space the player has access to seems to not be for them, and even
during the day there’s hardly anyone in there.
Despite Varric's comment about is as a "building full of sweet old grandmothers", it’s
hard to imagine feeling welcome there, it’s more like you’re intruding. It was
built to be a magister’s palace and hasn’t really stopped being that for
different magisters.
Also Hawke gets beat up there a lot.
