Good day to be an eaglet

A few closeups of the almost 4-week-old Big Bear Bald eagle chick from yesterday. The snow from the night before quickly melted away during the day, and the little one spent more time next to rather than under its parents. Last screenshot shows a fish prey, the others don't.

Hanging out with mom Jackie. You can catch a peek of the alula pin feathers as the chick preens its wing.

Parent-shaped umbrellas

Recent screenshots from the two Californian Bald eagle nests I've been watching this season, Big Bear and West End nests, both dealing with some inclement weather. Warning for closeups of prey at both, and mild sibling rivalry at the West End one.

Checking in on eaglets again

It's how I have fun.

Screenshots from the West End Bald eagle nest, and later in the post the other two nests I've been keeping an eye on. Warning for views of prey, though not in focus.

New acquisitions of depictions of old faves

I have some new dinos. As a lovely surprise (I bought them on ebay and don't know the seller personally), they arrived not only securely packaged but giftwrapped!

Thank you! :D
The dinos are minifigures from the Walking With Dinosaurs movie. I haven't seen it, and haven't heard very good things about it (other than that this post is canon in my heart, and maybe I'll watch the movie without voiceover some day if that's available), but Pachyrhinosaurus is one of my favorite ceratopsians, and this set has two of them. Oh, and my favorite dinosaur is also there.

E20 fledges!

The younger of the two eaglets at the Southwest Florida Bald eagle nest flew out of the nest tree for the first time yesterday. And returned safely right after, with a new record for shortest first flight at this nest. Here are some screenshots I took of both the fledging and things the eaglets got up to before and after on the same day.

Starting with before fledging: E20 perching right next to the camera.
Can I eat this?
How about this?
Hello!

Small wingers and cuddles

The chick at the Big Bear Bald eagle nest is between two and three weeks old, and growing fast. Thermal down has grown in, and so the chick needs less brooding, especially when the weather is warm. Warning for prey in the nest, but not in focus.

Cuddling with the unhatched egg for nap. Both parents at the nest at the moment, dad Shadow on the left of the chick and mom Jackie on the right.

And those promised wingers.

Family portraits at branches and cliffs

Screenshots from the SWFL Bald eagle nest (and West End nest later in the post). These are from two days ago, and mostly feature the younger eaglet E20, but the most recent news is that his older sister E19 has fledged! I don't have pictures, as the cameras were down at the time, and still are at the moment, but here's video of the fledge filmed on location by Marie Lapointe-Chism and posted to Youtube by Lady Hawk with her permission. E19 has since safely returned to the nest.

E20 (front), E19, and mom Harriet perching together at sunrise.
And some cute E20 closeups.

Whose eggs?

(Jurassic Park movie and Jurassic Park: The Game spoilers)

A new surprise contender enters the list of candidates for what dinosaur's eggs do Dr. Grant, Lex, and Tim find in Jurassic Park. Velociraptor? Gallimimus? There are arguments for both. But we don't see exactly how far from the tree they slept in they are when they stumble upon the nest, or how many fences they may have crossed along the way, i.e. what paddock they're in. Topps' comic adaptation of the movie takes a lot less ambiguous approach (my copy is in Finnish, but the dialogue is not much different from the movie's, and you can find an English version at the JP wiki):

The nest is under that very tree.
Given that the characters were just woken up by Brachiosaurus like in the movie, that would mean they're still in the Brachiosaurus enclosure. Is that whose eggs those are?

New heights

Eaglets E19 and E20 at the SWFL Bald eagle nest both reached a new branch yesterday.

Older eaglet E19 perching on the "attic" branch, with mom Harriet behind her. E19 has gotten comfy on this branch, so it's time to level up.

E19's first visit to the attic

Didn't I say it won't be long that the SWFL eaglets reach the higher branches of the nest tree. E19 knows how to start the day.

E19 perching on the lower veranda branch, with a beautiful sunrise backdrop, and considering the attic branch on the other side of the nest.

The big leap!

Bald eaglets big and small

Some more screenshots from the SWFL and West End Bald eagle nests. Warning for close views of prey in the latter.

First SWFL's 11-week old branch climbers. Cute closeups of younger eaglet E20, perching on the "veranda" branch.

Three Bald eagle clutches and a beginning Red-tailed hawk one

Warning that the post includes views of prey in the nests.

First some peeks at Jackie and Shadow's eaglet at the Big Bear nest from yesterday. The little one will be two weeks old this thursday.

Now in three storeys

A few more raptorsim screenshots (only a few, so not a long post this time). Previous posts can be found in the tag I've now made for them.

The raptorlets have found a new part of the house to utilize, or in other words, a new forbidden balcony: the roof directly above the allowed balcony. Can't be very forbidden since there's a ladder leading up there, but maybe it was put there for maintenance and then just never removed.

Perfect for all sorts of safe activities like pillowfights not far from the edge.

Tyrant cards

I received my postcard set from Creative Beast Studio's Beasts of the Mesozoic Tyrannosaur line kickstarter today!

Pictured here with all my tyrannosaur figures, all of which are not by Creative Beast Studio. They just like to pose with all things tyrannosaur that I acquire. But they will hopefully soon get a new friend, as I'm expecting a figure, too, to go with these absolutely beautiful cards.

This is set #2, so half of what's available. The postcards in the above photo feature Yutyrannus huali by Shannon Beaumont, and Alectrosaurus olseni by Raul Ramos.

And in these cards, from left to right: Suskityrannus hazelae (and Zuniceratops christopheri) by Raul Ramos, Proceratosaurus bradleyi by Gabriel Ugueto, juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex by RJ Palmer, and Moros intrepidus by Raph Lomotan.

E20 branches, too!

The younger eaglet E20 doing wing exercises today at Southwest Florida Bald eagle nest.

Older sibling E19 watches as E20 spreads his wings again, and takes a leap...

...directly to the veranda branch!

Snow fort for eaglet and egg

A snowy feeding at the Big Bear Bald eagle nest yesterday, and it didn't get any less snowy as the day progressed. Warning for bloody prey in view.
