Fledglings and not quite fledglings

Screenshots of the Cornell Red-tailed hawks and also West End of Catalina Island Bald eagles. Both nests still have one chick yet to fledge. Warning for occasional views of prey, and of a bug (wasp), as well as blood on the chicks' feet (from prey, they're fine).

L4 gets up and stretches wings, L3 preens L4's head feathers.

Another sibling drops by. L3 is on the light box on the left, other sibling on the grate above the nest.

L3 middle, L4 back. Not sure again which one of the older two chicks is on the left here. Initial guess was L2, but in some screenshots its markings look more like L1's, lol. I've pretty much given up on trying to tell those two apart. L3 is a bit darker and has more spots on the upper middle of the orange chest floof, while L1 and L2 mostly have them on the sides. L1's are concentrated on the sides the most clearly out of the four of them, but feathers overlap a bit differently at different times and angles, so L1 and L2 look a lot alike.

Beaking, allopreening, and snacks. Looks like a good time.

At West End about a week ago, morning wingers by the oldest chick, Kana'kini.

Having recently fledged, this time her wing workout is done by actually flying!

And back!

One of the younger chicks gives it a go, too. Just wing flaps, though. Not sure which little brother this is.

Later the same day, the also already fledged youngest chick Ahote takes off flying, too.

Middle chick Sky (left) and Kana'kini at the nest with dad Akecheta. He looks so small next to them now! (Kana'kini is bigger than him, being a female, and Sky looks bigger, too, due to juveniles having longer and broader flight feathers to aid at learning to fly).

Sky does a beautiful, high hover over the nest while his siblings fly nearby. Can't be long now that he realizes he can join them.
