An unexpected addition

Screenshots from Sääksilive Osprey nests. Includes views of fish prey.

Morning preens by Utu and Lumme at nest #1 yesterday.
Just hanging out.
Tracking...
Dad spotted!
Lumme claims the fish, but Utu is quick to steal it.

Good job!

This morning, Lumme taking off with a fish in her talons.
Utu, Lumme.
Eura flies to the nest. He doesn't have a fish, but is followed by fledglings all the same.

There's Utu, and...
That's not Lumme!
A fledgling from another nest has decided to pay a visit. Well, once they can fly, chicks can go wherever they want, and sometimes they find a place serving fish on their journeys.

This nest has also had visiting youngsters before, with Nuppu and Nemo's chick Lumo moving in after fledging last season: Fish begging quartet (cw: they are very loud, lol) Eine and Eura's three chicks Tuomi, Usva, and Roihu in the front row, the one at the back is Lumo. She stuck around until migration.

This fledgling doesn't have bands, so we don't know where it came from, but it's clearly this season's baby Like Lumme and Utu. Maybe it'll go home soon, maybe its parents have already migrated and it wants to stay.

Some difference in juvenile plumages. Lumme and Utu both have less markings on their face than the visitor does.

Utu and the visitor seem to get along for a while.
But eventually someone makes a wrong move and the other feels threatened.

And Utu gets thrown out!
The visiting fledgling (VF for short from now on) stays. Tough kid.

Eura brings a fish, and there's only one chick at the nest to receive it.

VF claims the fish and chows down. Raptor parents will bring food to whichever chick is at their nest, and sometimes it's not their own.

So far you've scored a spot to rest at and a fish, this is looking like a pretty successful trip.

Lumme arrives at the nest.
And gets chased away, too. Not sure if the reception would have been as aggressive if VF hadn't had a fish, but looks like it wants to make sure no one takes its snack away. Lumme looked like she wasn't expecting such a reaction, especially since she's the oldest of her clutch and Utu is smaller than her, so she's not used to much opposition.

Well, we'll see how this goes. Lumo didn't get a warm welcome when she first turned up, either, and had some clashes with Tuomi, the oldest of the resident clutch that year (and also a female), but eventually she settled in.

Lumme flies to the balcony branch.
VF eating, Lumme preening.

Meanwhile at nest #4, Nemo is still at the territory, and has been stopping by at the nest to do housekeeping. Moving sticks, bringing some new ones, too.

Tracking a kestrel flying past the nest.
Nictitating membranes shielding eyes.

Some glamour shots to end the day.

And another work session this morning. Nuppu hasn't been seen, so she has probably gone on migration now. Males usually stay for longer, though it's usually because they still have chicks to care for, which at this point in the season could be done by one parent, freeing up the female to leave since she doesn't have to guard the fledglings anymore. But fixing up the nest for the winter before they leave it is a job worth doing, too, perhaps.

Speaking of Nemo and Nuppu's chick, N2/USU has been seen by a vet. No injuries found in the left wing, so if there was one, it seems it's healed now. He hasn't taken captivity well, though, and has had trouble eating. Understandable, as he's been through a lot of changes very quickly and being handled by humans is stressful for a wild animal. Until he feels well enough to eat on his own, he's getting his "fish" through a hose, but hopefully he'll start regaining his strength soon.
