Fish rumble!

Lumme and Ulpukka had a proper fight over a fish today. Both seem okay afterwards, here are some action shots.

Ulpukka flies to the nest with a fish. She got it from Eura earlier and kept Lumme from landing in the nest with them, and the two chicks have been exchanging screams for a while at this point. I guess Lumme decided enough's enough.

Incoming!

Lumme swoops at Ulpukka, who takes cover. No contact was made, but the message is clear: no more negotiating. Give up the fish, or else.

Ulpukka is determined to keep her prize.

Again no contact, Ulpukka jumps backwards to get her talons pointed upwards in case Lumme wants to use hers. You sometimes see fighting raptors do that while both are flying, and it tends to look more dignified under those circumstances.

She gets knocked down, she gets up again.

But Lumme isn't done swooping.

I don't think this one hit, either, but Lumme came down to the nest this time. She flies up, and immediately dives back down...

...on top of Ulpukka.

Lumme grabs Ulpukka by the wing.

And drags her off the nest! Looked pretty rough, but Ulpukka has been flying afterwards, so nothing should be broken. The chicks went off camera for about ten minutes, screaming at each other somewhere nearby.

Lumme flies to the nest to claim the fish.

And doesn't stick around for long. Smart decision, staying might have resulted in round 2.

Ulpukka isn't far behind. Looks like she's got down feathers on her beak, probably Lumme's. But Lumme has the fish.

Later, Eura brings a new fish, Lumme flies to the nest with him.

Just as she's about to claim it, however, she changes her mind and turns away. She's bowed in a position chicks usually take when a sibling has a fish and they want to show they're not trying to steal it, so they'll be left alone.

Both Lumme and Eura fly away, leaving the fish behind.

Ulpukka soon turns up and takes the fish. Maybe Lumme spotted her nearby and didn't want another fight today, so since she just ate, she let Ulpukka have this one.

Eura brings one more. Ulpukka waits a bit to claim it, and screams at Lumme somewhere off frame first. Then she actually takes the rest of her previous fish and flies away with it.

Lumme arrives to claim the new fish.

She gets to eat it at the nest, but best make it loud and clear the fish is hers and not up for grabs.

An intense afternoon, but both girls are going to bed with a full crop.
